Battlestar Galactica Star Tricia Helfer Declares, ‘If You Have to Be Human, At Least Be Humane’
May 12, 2008
Battlestar Galactica beauty Tricia Helfer and her rescued cat, Mr. Nix, strike a heavenly pose in PETA’s gorgeous new ad campaign, “Be an Angel for Animals.” Although her character, Number Six, may have a strong distrust of the human race, in real life the stunning actor encourages people to give a “frak” about cats and make them a part of their families.
“Your cats depend on you. Play with them, clean their litterbox daily, never leave them outside unattended, and always make sure they have clean water and a cozy spot for gazing out at the great outdoors. Most importantly, be sure to show them love and affection every day,” says Helfer.
The safest place for cats is indoors. Besides the numerous communicable diseases cats who roam outdoors can get, they risk getting lost, injured, hit by an automobile, or hurt by a cruel person. They might also be snatched by “bunchers”–people who steal dogs and cats and sell them for use in experiments. Spaying and neutering is also important in preventing the births of unwanted kittens and protecting cats from cancer of the reproductive organs.
In an exclusive PETA interview shot behind-the-scenes at her photo shoot, Helfer urges people to keep cats inside, talks about spoiling her own six cats, and gives fans a spoiler alert about the final season of her hit show. Asked what her television character would do to an animal abuser, she says, “Number Six would not be very kind to somebody who abuses animals. She would probably … do to them what they were doing to the animal.”
