British Government Puts BBC Under Scrutiny for “trafficking” African Migrants

May 22, 2008

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is currently embroiled in alleged human trafficking, with the government putting the institution under scrutiny after one of its reporters “attempted” to sneak into Britain with nine Africans” in an ‘air-tight’ refrigerated truck.

The UK Immigration minister Liam Byrne, Wednesday, branded the stunt as “irresponsible and dangerous” and called the BBC director general Mark Thompson in for questioning.

Byrne recalled the ill-fated 58 Chinese immigrants who suffocated trying to enter the United Kingdom in a similar trailer in 2000.

The scenario began Monday when French police found the BBC journalist, Eduardo Bogado, in the back of a lorry with nine Eritreans at Calais.

Bogado works for Insight News, which is producing a series of programs on immigration for BBC 2’s Newsnight.

The Immigration minister said the reporter, who was wearing a hidden camera, asked the Africans to accompany him.

“I appreciate the appetite for investigative journalism…., but this was ill-judged, said the minister who mandated the BBC management to investigate the matter thoroughly.

The BBC through its spokesman, has responded that “We take safety extremely seriously”, adding that the project was duly approved by the corporation’s executives.
