125px-Flag_of_Botswana.svg2The ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has won the parliamentary polls held on Friday, securing 46 seats out of the 57 seats across the country.

The opposition parties; the Botswana National Front (BNF) and the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) garnered only six and five seats respectively.

Automatically therefore, President Ian Khama has been re-elected as the country’s president for another five years. This was confirmed by Chief Justice Julian Nganunu on Sunday.

“I have the honor and privilege to declare Ian Khama the president as his party has garnered more than enough seats for him to be declared president of the republic of Botswana,” he said.

BDP’s spokesperson Comma Serema said his party had expected to win the elections with relative ease because “We had really worked hard and prepared for the elections.”

However, the BNF Publicity Secretary, Moeti Mhwasa said though they had lost six of their seats to the ruling party “we will have to sit down and pick up the pieces and move forward,” he said.

For his part, the BCP spokesperson Dumelang Saleshando said “we thank the voters for assisting us to add four seats to the one seat that we had.”

There was a high voter turnout across the country and 725,000 people were registered to vote at 2,288 polling stations across the country.
