Brain Drain Causing Massive Shortage of Nurses in Kenya, Says Minister

July 24, 2008

Kenya’s minister for medical services, Anyang Nyong’o on Wednesday said the country is facing a countrywide shortage of nurses as nurses trained in the country look for greener pastures abroad.

Speaking in Nairobi at an award ceremony for nurses, Nyong’o said Kenyan nurses are sought around the world due to their excellent training which he regretted is leaving the country with a massive shortage of nurses.

He said the government is going to hire 1,600 nurses this year in a bid to counter the shortage.

He said there is a need to offer the nurses better pay in order to retain them.

Ninety percent of the nurses and doctors trained in the country seek greener pastures in countries such as Botswana, United States and Britain.
