Brazilian Envoy Pledges to Bring Ethanol Technology to Tanzania

May 25, 2008

The Brazilian ambassador to Tanzania, Mr Appio Claudia Acquarone is aspiring to bring to Tanzania the technology of producing ethanol from sugarcane.

Speaking to journalists in Dar es Salaam on Sunday morning, the ambassador said Tanzania has all the potentials of adopting the ethanol technology, noting that he will be happy to succeed in bringing the technology to the country.

According to him, 45 percent of all vehicles in Brazil now use the bio-fuel extracted through ethanol technology.

”If I succeed in transferring the technology into this country, I think I could go back home comfortably,” he said.

The ambassador said that the Tanzania government’s interest on the transfer of the ethanol technology started to be shown during former President Benjamin Mkapa’s rule.

Ethanol, a colorless liquid that is used in alcoholic beverages as solvent in the manufacture of other chemicals is also now used as bio-fuel in other countries, including in Brazil.

Brazil is the world’s second largest producer of ethanol and the world’s largest exporter, and it is considered to have the world’s first sustainable biofuels economy and the leader in the industry.
