British Envoy Urges Kenya Not to Grant Amnesty to Post Election Agitators
October 25, 2008
The British envoy in the Kenyan capital has appealed to the government not to grant amnesty to the perpetrators of post election violence that claimed the lives of more than 1000 people and displaced over 300,000.
The British High Commissioner Robert Nigel, said it was always the norm worldwide to try people who have committed serious abuses of human rights and that Kenya should do likewise.
He was reacting to last week’s Post election violence report that was handed to the country’s authorities implicating senior politicians and business people that allegedly financed and plotted the tribal violence.
Already the country’s political leadership is divided on whether or not to grant amnesty to the individuals named in the Commission into Post Election violence (CIPEV) report.
Nigel urged the coalition government to use all its powers to implement the report and pledged the British government’s readiness to assist the government in carry out the recommendations of the report.
He expressed satisfaction over the performance of the Grand Coalition government since it was formed between Kibaki and Odinga in February 28.
