British Navy has Handed Over 8 Somali Pirates to Kenyan Authorities
November 19, 2008
British minister for armed forces, Bob Ainsworth on Tuesday disclosed that the British Royal Navy has handed over eight captured Somali pirates nabbed during a failed hijack attempt on 11 November.
All eight were captured following an exchange of gunfire on the high seas off Somalia during an attempt to hijack a Danish cargo vessel, the MV Powerful in the Gulf of Aden, the minister said.
Two pirates were subsequently killed in the gunfire exchange.
Ainsworth said Britain remains committed in fighting piracy in the Somali waters and that the captured pirates will be tried in the Kenyan courts.
He made the comments as he was hosted by Kenya’s minister for internal security, George Saitoti at his Nairobi office.
Responding, Saitoti expressed regrets over the kidnapping of Catholic nun by Al Shabab militias from Somali last week and describe it as “unacceptable”
He said Kenya will maintain security forces along the Kenya-Somali border to bolster security.
