Cameroon Commemorates Anniversary of Kenya Airways Crash

May 5, 2008

Several events were held Monday in Cameroon to commemorate the first anniversary of the Kenya Airways Boeing 737 crash near the Douala international airport, killing 114 people.

The Urban Community of Douala (CUD) Monday held an ecumenical worship at the Bois de Singe cemetery where the remains of some victims were laid to rest.

“We have no right to forget that dozens of Cameroonians and Africans died in a Kenya Airways flight in Douala on the night of 4 May 2007,” the Douala-based Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral rector said.

“We are joining our prayers to those of the victims’ families for the sad event,” the prelate said.

Recollection was also the watchword at the headquarters of Mobil telephone network (MTN), which has lost many employees in the crash including its general manger for Cameroon.

A similar atmosphere was perceptible at the local branch of Kenya Airways, where the staff “have not forgotten the fateful day.”

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said investigations are almost completed and findings are due to go public shortly.
