The Canadian Government has expressed its deep concern about the undermining of the peace agreement following the decision of the National Congress Party of Sudan to change the draft referendum bill on the separation of Southern Sudan, APA learned from reliable sources in Montreal.
According to Canada, the decision to amend the draft referendum bill has been made without prior consultation with the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, signatory of the Peace Agreement, an official said.
“Canada is deeply concerned about reports that the National Assembly in Khartoum adopted the draft referendum bill for Southern Sudan without the backing of both parties to the CPA”, says Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon.
The spirit of the agreement between the SPLM and the NCP, which is so fundamental to the implementation of the Agreement, should have received the consent of both parties before being adopted.
“This lack of trust between the parties is threatening the implementation of the peace agreement”, Minister Cannon said.
Canada has appealed to all stakeholders of the Peace Agreement for a commitment to work and cooperate to ensure a future of peace and prosperity to Sudan, the statement said.
“Canada strongly supports the implementation of the Agreement for trust to be established between the parties and for the country to enjoy a climate of stability and peace, regardless of the outcome of the 2011 referendum on the separation of the South”, the Foreign Minister said.
