Jean Pierre Fabre, the candidate for the Union of Forces for Change (UFC) in Togo’s presidential election of March 4 told a news conference on Friday that he has won the election.
He said “the compilation of the minutes of polling stations in our possession gives a comfortable lead to the candidate of the Union of Forces for Change”.
“On the basis of statements from various prefectures, the candidate of the UFC has won on average of 75 to 80% of the votes”, Fabre said, adding that “we conclude that we have won the presidential election of 4 March 2010”.
The president of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for his part told APA on the telephone that partial official results will not be released this Friday.
More than three million voters were registered to vote, according to data provided by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
There were 5,930 polling stations open on the entire national territory overseen by 36,000 poll workers.
The election was being monitored by 180 observers from the European Union and 300 from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), including 146 military observers.
Seven candidates were vying for the presidential election.
These are namely : Brigitte Kafui Adjamagbo-Johnson of the Democratic Convention of African Peoples (CDPA) ; Yawovi Agboyibo of the Action Committee for Renewal (CAR) ; Jean Pierre Fabre of the Union of Forces for Change (UFC) ; Bassabi Kagbara of the Panafrican Democratic Party (PDP) ; Agbéyomé Kodjo of the Organization for the Construction of a Solidarity-based Togo solidarity (OBUTS) ; Nicolas Lawson of the Party of Renewal and Redemption (PRR) ; and Faure Gnassingbé Eyadéma, the outgoing president, candidate of the Rally of the Togolese People (RPT).
