The Carter Center, which was recently invited by the Ethiopian government to observe the May 2010 national election, has announced its decision not to participate in the election.
According to a local newspaper-The Reporter, the Carter Center informed in a letter to the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs its decision not to observe the forthcoming election despite the invitation extended to it by the Ethiopian government.
However, according to the newspaper report, the Carter Center did not mention its reason why it refused to observe the election.
The Carter Center observed the previous election in Ethiopia that was held in May 2005.
The Center’s Ethiopian bureau declined to response to attempts by APA to get their reaction on the matter.
The Carter Center was established by the former United States president, Jimmy Carter, and it is currently undertaking various humanitarian activities, including observing elections in various countries across the world.
The European Union and the African Union election observer missions have also been invited to observe the election where over 27 million voters have registered to cast their vote.
APA learned that the European Commission has already deployed an exploratory mission to Ethiopia from 15-25 February 2010 to assess the possibility of deploying an EU election observer mission for the forthcoming 2010 national election.
This exploratory mission is expected to meet with the media on Thursday.
