<p>The national center will focus on technologies for offshore wind, wave and tidal power and is designed to bridge the gap between university research and full commercialization. It will have a UK wide remit, and build strong links with centers of excellence such as Wave Hub and the marine energy park in the South West of England. </p>
<p>Speaking at the launch of the Catapult in Glasgow, Vince Cable said: </p>
<p>“Our offshore renewable sector can compete on a global scale and has huge potential for growth. If we can harness that we will generate billions of pounds for the economy whilst creating thousands of job opportunities at the same time. </p>
<p>“The Catapult center will be based in a Scottish world-class center of excellence, part of a collaboration with a center in the North East of England.” </p>
<p>Today’s announcement is part of the Government’s investment in a network of Catapult centers across a number of sectors. The £140 million High Value Manufacturing Catapult is now operating across seven locations around the UK. A £50 million Cell Therapy Catapult will be established in London and a Satellite Applications Catapult and Connected Digital Economy Catapult will be set up later this year. </p>
<p>The Catapult center program is managed by the Technology Strategy Board as part of a wider support package for innovation. </p>
<p>Iain Gray, Chief Executive of the Technology Strategy Board said: </p>
<p>“Our reputation and expertise in offshore engineering, gained through many years of commercial North Sea oil activity, makes the UK an excellent base for innovation relevant to the emerging offshore renewable energy sector. </p>
<p>“The generation and supply of renewable energy is now a major component of global energy and economic policies. UK businesses have an opportunity to be a significant part in this global industry.” </p>
<p>The Secretary of State announced the decision to create an Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult in Liverpool in May 2011. It is expected to be open by summer this year. </p>
<p>The center will be delivered by a consortium comprised of the Carbon Trust, Narec and Ocean Energy innovation (itself an industrially led group with strong links into the world class capabilities developed at universities such as Strathclyde and Edinburgh). </p>
<p>Professor Jim McDonald, Chairman of the Energy Technology Board and Principal of the University of Strathclyde, said: </p>
<p>“I am delighted that this truly collaborative bid has been successful. By securing the UK Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, the country will build on our already globally competitive reputation for advances in renewable technology and deployment. </p>
<p>“Our world-class research base offers distinct advantages and will accelerate industrial innovation. We will help to develop and drive the industry over the coming ten years and beyond. </p>
<p>“We aim to make the ORE Catapult the world’s pre-eminent center of expertise for rapid development and commercialization of highly innovative technologies that will substantially reduce the cost of offshore renewable energy.” </p>

<p>A stunning addition to Marriott International&#8217;s JW Marriott hotel brand, the JW Marriott Marquis Dubai will open in two phases, with the first section featuring 807 rooms and numerous restaurants and lounges.&#160;&#160; At a height of 355 meters (1,164 feet), the JW Marriott Marquis Dubai is the tallest dedicated hotel building in the world and is just 26 meters (85 feet) shorter than the Empire State Building in New York.</p>
<p>In addition to serving the luxury business traveler, the hotel is targeting the lucrative and increasingly important MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) market, which currently does not have a hotel of sufficient scale to host such large groups.&#160;&#160; In addition to all the dining and entertainment options, the hotel will have two ballrooms, 24 meeting rooms and a total of 5,100 square meters (54,895 square feet) of event space.</p>
<p>&quot;The potential to cater for the growing needs of the global business community is huge and we believe the JW Marriott Marquis Dubai is uniquely placed in that regard,&quot; said Rupprecht Queitsch, general manager.&#160;&#160; &quot;The hotel will fill a long identified gap in the market where groups, meetings and conventions of up to 1,000 people can meet, sleep and dine under one roof, in one location. There are businesses of this size choosing various cities around the world in which to meet, but until now, Dubai has not had a single location of this size to accommodate this type of group. <p>To give this market some context, the United States&#8217; MICE segment, which will be one of the key targets of the JW Marriott Marquis Dubai team, contributes $106 billion to that country&#8217;s GDP – higher than automotive manufacturing ($78 billion), performing arts/spectator sports/museums ($71 billion) and information and data processing services ($76 billion).</p>
<p>Dubai&#8217;s excellent air service, especially with the emerging BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) economies,&#160; are expected to create further opportunity. Nasser Saidi, chief economist for the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), has already noted the growth in Chinese firms coming to Dubai to set up a hub to access the African markets, and China is becoming an increasingly important export partner for the UAE. In the first quarter of 2011, for example, China exported AED10.68bn worth of goods to Dubai and was the emirate&#8217;s second biggest export partner during that period.</p>

<p><strong>Dining, Entertainment &amp; Wellness Options</strong></p>
<p>The JW Marriott Marquis Dubai will offer an array of nine restaurants and five lounges and entertainment venues. The Vault lounge will sit on the 71st and 72nd floors with panoramic views of the city; a yet-to-be named late-night music venue will offer live music daily.&#160; Restaurants will range from Prime 68, a boutique steakhouse, to Atul Kochhar&#8217;s Rang Mahal Indian restaurant, Positano for Italian coastal cuisine, an Arabic restaurant and La Farine, an attractive boulangerie and social meeting spot.</p>
<p>The 1,500 square-meter (16,000 square-foot) Saray Spa draws inspiration from the caravanserai silk route across Arabia, with treatments designed to ensure mind and body renewal.&#160; Treatments include the signature milk and honey treatment, an Arabic coffee awakener, a lemon and mint body polish and pomegranate renewal treatment.&#160; For sun worshippers, an enormous pool deck covers the seventh floor of the hotel with a 32 meter swimming pool and deck with elegant cabanas, lounges and umbrellas.</p>

Researchers from the University of Missouri have found that United States consumers are more willing to buy clothing made from sustainably grown U.S. cotton than apparel produced using conventional practices in an unknown location.</p>
<p><span id="more-132103"></span>
<p>Jung Ha-Brookshire, an assistant professor in the textile and apparel management department in the College of Human Environmental Sciences at MU, says transparency is the key.</p>
<p>“It is important for the apparel industry to remain transparent about its products, especially if they are produced in a sustainable manner,” Ha-Brookshire said. “We have shown that consumers want to know where their clothes come from and would rather buy sustainably produced clothes. Many apparel companies use sustainable practices; however, they don’t promote them very well.”</p>
<p>Ha-Brookshire and fellow researcher Pamela Norum, an associate professor and director of graduate studies in the textile and apparel management department at MU, define sustainable cotton-growing practices as using fewer pesticides and less water, land, and energy compared to traditional practices, which result in a decreased environmental impact.</p>
<p>For their research, Ha-Brookshire and Norum surveyed 500 respondents nationwide. They found that not only were consumers more willing to buy sustainably produced cotton apparel grown in the U.S. over nonspecific cotton apparel, but consumers were willing to pay up to five dollars (16.7 percent) more for a $30 cotton shirt produced sustainably in the U.S.</p>
<p>Norum believes these results show how important it is for U.S. cotton growers and apparel companies to promote themselves.</p>
<p>“The apparel industry and specifically U.S. cotton farmers are missing a big opportunity to promote their brand,” Norum said. “Consumers want to buy sustainably produced cotton and they want to buy U.S. cotton. Many U.S. cotton farmers are using these sustainable practices but aren’t communicating that fact well enough to the public. If they would increase transparency about cotton production consumers would be more likely to buy their products.”</p>
<p>The studies by Ha-Brookshire and Norum were published in the Journal of Consumer Marketing and Clothing and Textiles Research Journal.</p>

<p>The Batteries and Energy Storage Hub will focus on accelerating research and development of electrochemical energy storage for transportation and the electric grid. The hub will be funded at up to $20 million in Fiscal Year 2012 and managed by the Basic Energy Sciences program of DOE&#8217;s Office of Science.</p>
<p>Universities, national laboratories, nonprofit organizations, and private firms are eligible to compete and are encouraged to form partnerships when submitting their proposals. Interdisciplinary research and development conducted through the new Energy Innovation Hub will help advance cutting-edge energy storage and battery technologies. These technologies can be used to improve the reliability and the efficiency of the electrical grid; better integrate renewable energy technologies as part of the electrical system; and reduce the nation&#8217;s dependence on foreign oil using electric and hybrid vehicles.</p>
<p>Energy innovation hubs are designed to bring together teams of scientists and engineers across intellectual disciplines to rapidly accelerate scientific discoveries and shorten the path from laboratory innovation to technological development and commercial deployment of critical energy technologies. Letters of Intent to apply are due March 1, 2012, with full applications due May 31, 2012. The award selection is expected this summer. <p>In addition to having a custom remix of her hit song featured in the game, Spears will be featured on game packaging, in a television ad and in dance instruction videos that will be released in Fall 2012.</p>
<p>The game invites kids to rock the spots by placing moveable TWISTER spots on the floor and then following the direction of the TWISTER DANCE console. The TWISTER DANCE console offers superior sound quality and bright, multi-color LED lights that light up to show dancers on which spots they should place their feet. Arm and hand movements are up to the dancers, allowing them to show off their individual style.</p>
<p>Girls will also be able to move to the beat of songs featuring Ke$ha and Willow Smith, and an exclusive TWISTER DANCE song called “Caught Up in a Twister.” Plus, players can connect any mp3 player to the console to dance to their own tunes. The built-in beat detection system turns any song into a dance routine, so players can rock the spots with new and different songs every time they play.</p>
<p>TWISTER DANCE will be available in Fall 2012 for the approximate retail price of $34.99. The game is recommended for 1 to 2 players, ages 8 and up. Four AA batteries are required for the dance console. The game includes 8 moveable TWISTER spots (4 per player).</p>

<p>The additional cash flow will enable American to renew its fleet and to invest several hundred million dollars per year in ongoing improvements in products and services . The improved cash flow will also allow American to further reduce its debt and become financially stronger in the years after its emergence from the restructuring process.</p>
<p>Tom Horton, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, said, &quot;American Airlines is moving forward decisively. The plan we are outlining today provides the framework for a new American Airlines, positioned to succeed in an intensely competitive industry that has been transformed by our competitors&#8217; recent restructurings. Just as other airlines have done and will continue to do, we must invest restructuring-related cost savings in ongoing innovation and customer service improvements that drive revenue. The airlines that have failed to adapt to these changes are no longer in business. Change will be difficult, particularly as we will be ending this process with fewer people, but it is a necessity. American is ready to compete and win.&quot;</p>
<p>Horton further noted that in connection with the implementation of American&#8217;s business plan, the company intends to engage in appropriate negotiations with its economic stakeholders and union representatives and seek necessary Bankruptcy Court approvals.</p>
<p><b><u>Restructuring – Non-Employee Cost Reductions       <br /></u></b>American&#8217;s plans build on initiatives already in place that reduced costs significantly over the past several years, including major changes to its route structure, network, capacity and fleet. Utilizing the benefits of the restructuring process, American intends to realize additional savings over the next six years by restructuring debt and leases, grounding older planes, improving supplier contracts, and undertaking other initiatives.</p>
<p>A central element of American&#8217;s transformation is the overhaul of its fleet, which will reduce fuel, maintenance, and financing costs, and provide improved profitability and growth over time, by enabling American to better match the right equipment to the right routes.</p>
<p><b><u>Necessary Reduction of Employee Costs       <br /></u></b>A fundamental element of American&#8217;s plan, which is designed to allow it to exit restructuring and vigorously compete and win, includes employee cost reductions across all work groups. American informed employees earlier today that all groups, including management, must reduce their total costs by 20 percent. While the savings from each work group will be achieved somewhat differently, the plan provides that each will experience the same percentage reduction. These reductions would result in average annual employee-related savings of $1.25 billion from 2012 through 2017.</p>
<p>As described in its internal announcements today, American&#8217;s business plan and proposals encompass a total reduction of approximately 13,000 employees. Included in the total employee impact is the expected result of a previously launched redesign of American&#8217;s management and support staff structure that will reduce 15 percent of management positions. Consistent with the approach taken by other major airlines in their restructurings, American&#8217;s plan also includes:</p>
<ul>
<li>Outsourcing a portion of American&#8217;s aircraft maintenance work, including seeking closure of the Fort Worth Alliance Airport (AFW) maintenance base, and certain airport fleet service clerk work; </li>
<li>Removing major structural barriers to operational flexibility, such as restrictions on codesharing and regional flying </li>
<li>Introducing work rule changes to increase productivity.</li>
</ul>
<p>American also said it will seek Bankruptcy Court approval to terminate its defined benefit pension plans. If the plans are terminated, American will contribute matching payments in a 401(k) plan. American also will seek to discontinue subsidizing future retiree medical coverage for current employees, but will offer access to these plans if employees choose to pay for them. American also proposes to implement common medical plans and contribution structures across all active employee groups.</p>
<p>&quot;These are painful decisions,&quot; Horton continued, &quot;but they are essential to American&#8217;s future. We will emerge from our restructuring process as a leaner organization with fewer people, but we will also preserve tens of thousands of jobs that would have been lost if we had not embarked on this path – and that&#8217;s a goal worth fighting for. By reinvesting savings back into our business, we will support job growth, including growth at our suppliers and partners over the long run. Only a successful, profitable and growing American Airlines can provide stability and opportunity for our people.&quot;</p>
