The United Kingdom’s government weather agency, the Met Office, has put much of the UK on flood alert with severe weather warnings for the majority of England and Wales and much of Northern Ireland. The British Foreign Office has decided not to send 40 bagpipers to a military music festival in Moscow as a protest over Russia’s actions in Georgia, a foreign office spokesperson said. Latvia Erects a Monument to Canned Fish But Its Not the First

A monument to caned fish has been unveiled in Latvia, one of the world’s main producers of sprats, the local media have reported. The sculpture, located at a fish-packing factory in the western Latvian city of Liepaja, portrays a metallic can with the message: “Sprats. Made in 1892″ and “Expiry date unlimited.” Read more
Russian Union of Evangelical Christians Requests Prosecutors Open a Criminal Investigation Against a TV Channel for Broadcasting South Park

The Russian Union of Evangelical Christians has said it had requested Russian prosecutors to open a criminal investigation against a TV channel that broadcasts the popular South Park cartoons. The group’s leader, Konstantin Bendas, is urging the prosecutors to ban the popular animated comedy series on the grounds that it contains “covert and overt propaganda of homosexuality and pedophilia as norms of sexual life.” Read more

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has announced an affordable fares package for 2009 to help sustain investment necessary to increase capacity and reliability across London’s transport network. The billions being invested in London’s transport network will support the transformation of the Tube, preparations for 2012, deliver Crossrail, the extension of the London Overground network and Docklands Light Railway, an even better bus network and sustainable schemes to get more people cycling and walking. Van Driver Fined for Breaking Rolling Road Block

A van driver from Mossley has become the second driver in Tameside to be prosecuted for ignoring Highways Agency Traffic Officers’ directions, after breaking a rolling road block imposed by Traffic Officers on the M60. Derek Carley, aged 51, appeared at Tameside Magistrates’ Court on Monday (01/09/08) and admitted driving without reasonable consideration for other road users. He was fined £585 with three penalty points added to his driving license. Read more
