The Chief of Staff of President Ali Bongo of Gabon, Jean Pierre Oyiba, involved in the financial scandal of the Paris branch of the Bank of Central Africa State (BEAC), has resigned.
In a press statement read Monday night on national television, Mr. Oyiba justified his decision « for ethical reasons and to preserve the spirit of good governance advocated by the head of state Ali Bongo, in order to devote myself entirely to my defense in this case and make myself totally available to the justice of my country in which I have faith”.
He justifies its decision by the article “published in the weekly Jeune Afrique No. 2548 of November 8, 2009, and other unjustified and biased allegations involving him and therefore aimed at sowing disorder and confusion in the minds of Gabonese and the international community”.
When the financial scandal of the BEAC broke out, Mr. Oyiba was Director General of the Office of Ports and Harbors of Gabon (OPRAG), a position he left recently after his appointment as Chief of Staff to President Ali Bongo.
The weekly Jeune Afrique published two facsimiles of checks issued by the BEAC on behalf of former Director General of OPRAG.
