Emblem of the African UnionThe Chinese chairman of National Committee of the People’s Political Consultative Conference, Jia Qinglin, pledged on behalf of his government $100 million to support the activities of the African Union (AU) Commission for 2012.

Jia made the announcement , on Saturday in Addis Ababa, during the inauguration of the new AU headquarters and conference facilities built and funded by China to the tune of $200 million.

He praised the warm welcome he received from the dozens of African leaders and high-ranking personalities gathered for the first time at the new AU 2,506-seat conference center.

Jia indicated that Africa-China trade relations reached $150 billion since his country started investing in the continent few years ago while reassuring of China’s continued partnership with Africa.

After the inauguration of new offices and conference center, leaders visited the huge headquarters which is a 20-story building with the latest technology.

Currently, China is involved in various investment activities in most African states.

The AU will hence be holding its annual summits in the new premises which has more facilities and comfort.

The heads of state and government meetings were held at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa conference hall due to insufficient space for the delegates at the headquarters.
