China Poised to be Comoros’ Favorite Partner

The Union of Comoros on Sunday, 18 May inaugurated its new terminal building which was jointly funded by the People’s Republic of China and the French Development Agency (AFD) to the tune of 7 million Euros.

A Chinese mission led by the country’s Deputy-Trade Minister was in Maroni for the purpose as Beijing funded the extension works of the airport buildings, fencing and widening of the parking lot. The French government, for its part, helped to set the Hahaya airport to the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) by providing it with equipment in the field of navigation and meteorology.

As part of the official inauguration ceremony of the new terminal building on Sunday, the Comorian President, Ahmed Abdallah Sambi, hailed the Sino-Comorian cooperation that covers today various development sectors ranging from health to education and media.

According to the Comorian head of state, China was ready to grant a 32 million dollars loan to help the country “integrate the Comoros in the Eassy Submarine Cable Optic System Project to link it to the coast and the rest of the world”.

The Chinese delegation seized the opportunity while in the Comoros to visit the works funded by Beijing and meet with the Chinese community that is gaining ground in the country, especially in Maroni.
