Chinese Sub Embarrasses U.S. Navy
November 11, 2007
A Chinese submarine surfaced in the middle of a recent United States Navy exercise in the East China Sea between southern Japan and Taiwan.
The Song Class submarine is a 160ft diesel-electric attack submarine, which came within range to launch torpedoes or missiles at the super carrier U.S.S. Kitty Hawk.
It is believed that the incident is a major embarrassment for the Pentagon leaving American military chiefs dumbfounded and red-faced, according to United Kingdom newspaper, Daily Mail. According to senior NATO officials, the incident caused a sense of sudden fear in the U.S. Navy, as officials realized the seriousness of the encounter. One NATO figure was reported to have said that the effect was “as big a shock as the Russians launching Sputnik.”
“It would tie in with what we see the Chinese trying to do,” Commodore Stephen Saunders said, “which appears to be to deter the Americans from interfering or operating in their backyard, particularly in relation to Taiwan.”
Analysts believe that People’s Liberation Army was sending a message to the United States and the West by demonstrating their rapidly growing military capability to threaten foreign powers that might try to interfere in their own “backyard”, reports the Cleveland Leader.
