zambiaHealth Ministry spokesperson Reuben Kamoto Mbewe has said cholera cases in Zambia have continued to rise since the beginning of the rainy season in October last year.

Kamoto old journalists in the capital Zambia that 17 new cases were recorded over the weekend, bringing the total number of cholera cases in the country to 559 in three provinces of the country.

He named the affected provinces as Lusaka Province, especially the capital Lusaka, as well as Copperbelt and Southern Provinces, where 40 people were currently admitted to various health centers and were being treated for the disease.

Other cases have been treated and discharged during the last four months, while other suspected cases were still under investigation, he added

Cholera epidemics are common in Zambia with the onset of rains when drinking water sources become contaminated with poorly disposed sewerage.

The government has been under increasing criticism for allowing yearly outbreaks of cholera, with many calling for a solution once and for all.
