Clashes Between Police Officers Kill 3 Sunday in Bissau

April 13, 2008

Fighting between officers of the judicial and rapid reaction police (PIR) in Guinea Bissau’s capital on Sunday, left three dead and one seriously wounded.

The clashes were triggered when one police officer who allegedly killed a colleague on duty accidentally at the Interior ministry, was dragged in to the street and shot dead by elements of the rapid reaction police, anonymous sources said here.

Sources said the first policeman was killed by a stray bullet fired by his colleague.

The judicial police are a top section of the police in charge of the crackdown on fraudsters, such as drug dealers and people involved in money laundering.

After this dramatic event the murderer who still says he accidentally shot his colleague, while trying to kill a dog was arrested and detained at the judicial police headquarters.

In the middle of the day, several angry and heavily armed PIR officers stormed the premises of the judicial police in search of the man who killed their colleague.

Reliable sources said a policeman was killed and another one seriously wounded, bringing to three the number of victims of the incident.

Judicial police officers said they would suspend their activities to protest against the violation of their premises and the murder of their colleague.

In Guinea-Bissau, police officers and the military are said to be trigger-happy as they face no charges for shooting on people.
