A 30-year-old Malaysian national is scheduled to appear in Sydney Central Court for importing 1.4 kilograms of heroin and five kilograms of methamphetamine into Australia on two separate occasions.
On Tuesday, January 10 2012, Australian Customs and Border Protection Service officers examined the man’s suitcase during a baggage check when he arrived at the Sydney International Airport on a flight from Malaysia.
During the examination, Customs and Border Protection officers found a white crystalline substance concealed in six packages inside the suitcase.
Initial testing indicated the presence of methamphetamine with an estimated weight of five kilograms. Further forensic testing will be undertaken to confirm the exact weight and purity of the substance.
The man is a commercial airline pilot and was working when he was apprehended with the methamphetamine.
The arrest concludes an investigation that began on August 7 2011, when the man allegedly imported 1.4 kilograms of heroin into Sydney from Malaysia. He then delivered it to a 38-year-old man at a Sydney hotel, who was arrested as part of a joint AFP and NSW Police investigation.
The 30-year-old Malaysian national has been charged with one count of importing a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug, namely methamphetamine, contrary to section 307.1(1) of the Criminal Code Act 1995 and one count of importing a marketable quantity of a border controlled drug, namely heroin, contrary to section 307.1(2) of the Criminal Code Act 1995.
The maximum penalty for these offences is life imprisonment and/or an $825,000 fine and 25 years imprisonment and or a $550,000 fine respectively.
