Commonwealth Institute Trains 50 Nigerian Education Experts
March 26, 2008
The Vice-President, Commonwealth of Learning (COL), Professor Asha Kanwar, on Wednesday said that the organization had trained 50 Nigerian education experts for the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).
Kanwar told journalists in Abuja that the experts, trained in the past two years, would drive NOUN’s distance learning initiative.
She said the experts would in turn train other staff of the institution in its capacity building effort.
“These experts are also involved in capacity building efforts of other institutions running long distance programs.
“The need for more experts in Nigeria is growing by the day with the proposal by the Federal Government to promote open secondary schools and open polytechnics education,” she said.
According to her, the vision is to build a pool of experts to manage distance learning programs in Nigeria and in the ECOWAS countries.
Karwar said that Ghana planned to set up its own open university and that NOUN staff would help the sister African country in its capacity building program.
“Cameroun similarly plans to offer more distance learning education programs with NOUN serving as the center for capacity building for the courses.
“Gambia is also promoting a similar plan for distance learning and COL is coordinating the plan with NOUN,” she said.
Kanwar also said the organization was working with NOUN and Nigeria’s Ministry of Education to design long term manpower development programs for Nigeria.
