The Congolese President Denis Sassou Nguesso has launched in Brazzaville, the construction of 400 housing units at a total cost of 53 billion CFA francs.

China is involved in this operation which aims to improve the living conditions of the Congolese people and provide the capital and other cities with modern settings.

“From a cost of about 53 billion CFA francs, this project resulting from the China-Congo cooperation was signed on June 16”, the Director General of Civil Engineering, Jean Jacques Bouya, said.

“The work will effectively start next September 17 for a period of 36 months”, said Bouya, noting that the construction of the 400 – four to five-storey housing units is the beginning of the construction of 1000 homes to be built under the new seven-year mandate of President Sassou Nguesso.

“After more than half a century of independence, many of our citizens still live in barracks, and these homes will be built to improve the living conditions of the Congolese people and to restore their dignity”, the Congolese Minister of Housing and Construction, Mr. Alphonse Nsilou explained.

Under this program, social housing units were built two years ago in Pointe-Noire, the economic capital, in the department of Kouilou (south), and in Oyo in the department of the “Cuvette”.

With over one million inhabitants, the Congolese capital Brazzaville is facing an unprecedented population growth, like most other African capitals, which requires the construction of social housing to solve the thorny problem of housing.

“If it runs properly, the new policy will help the Congolese people to access decent housing”, Nsilou said.

However, “achieving this goal requires the production of building materials”, the Congolese Minister of Housing and Construction averred.
