Samoa’s first court case of witchcraft that allegedly resulted in the death of a 54 year old mother, is being heard in the Supreme Court this week.
The defendants are Felaua’i Lavasi’i and Sela Felaua’i of Levi, Sale’imoa who applied witchcraft on Afiafi Aoaga of Luatuanu’u village on the 28 of January this year.
The Court heard that the couple, who claim to be traditional healers, made the deceased sit on a bucket of hot water, as part of their treatment of her illness. Medical evidence presented in Court revealed that the cause of death was due to the method of treatment. The medical doctor who examined the deceased explained that woman’s vital organs have expanded and burnt. They include her lungs, which gave out a green extraction and her kidneys and brain were also affected. The doctor explained that woman was burnt by the hot steam that contributed to her death.
Prosecution, headed by lawyer Precious Chan, is calling more witnesses. Lawyer Tuisa Tasi Patea is representing the defendants.
