125px-Flag_of_Ethiopia.svg4The Ethiopian Federal High Court has convicted 26 defendants, including one general, and acquitted 5 others who were arrested six months ago in Addis Ababa and other part of the country for taking part in coup plots.

The court has been hearing the case for the past three months following the arrest of over 30 people whom the federal prosecutors of Ethiopia accused of plotting to commit a coup.

Accordingly, the Federal High Court of Ethiopia on Thursday convicted 26 while releasing 5 other defendants for not having enough evidence against them.

According to the country’s law, the defendants may face life imprisonment or death penalty, depending on the cases.

Six months ago, the government announced the arrest of the defendants with weapons and other information in relation with preparing to assassinate top government officials while not giving further details on the targeted officials.

Meanwhile, over five of the defendants were convicted in absentia.
