The Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) has announced the opening of an arbitration following the appeal lodged by the Togolese Football Federation (FTF) against the suspension of its national team from the next two editions of the African Cup of Nations (CAN) by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
According to CAS, the FTF requests the cancellation of the CAF penalty and the inclusion of the Togolese national squad in the list of teams participating in CAN 2012 playoffs.
The Court said, in a statement released Sunday, that the FTF also requested “urgent precautionary and protective measures for the drawing of lots for the qualification phase of the next CAN.”
The drawing of lots for the CAN 2012 qualifications is scheduled for 20 February in Lubumbashi, DR Congo.
“CAS urged CAF to express its views in writing regarding the FTF’s request for provisional measures,” the CAS statement said, announcing that it will issue an order on the precautionary measures motion before the drawing of lots.
The CAF executive committee suspended Togo from the next two CAN editions for “government interference” after the Togolese team left Angola CAN 2010 after the attack on the bus of the Togolese delegation. A rebel attack killed two people and injured several among the Togolese delegation that left Pointe Noire (Congo) en route to Angola for CAN 2010.
The FTF has engaged the services of three lawyers to defend its case.
