Dakar Jazz Festival Kicks Off with Five International Bands

June 13, 2008

The second edition of the Dakar Jazz Festival initiated by Senegalese radio journalist Michael Soumah is scheduled for 13-14 June at Daniel Sorano National Theatre in the Senegalese capital.

Like the first, the second edition centers on “return to roots and aims to foster a fruitful exchange between bands here and abroad”, said the organizers in a statement.

The festival will feature five bands from Finland, United States, Holland, Benin and Senegal, making it richer than in the maiden edition a year ago, the organizers said.

Featuring in the event are Ndioba and Xamlé Jazz Band from Finland, Senegal’s Opus Band, Benin’s Dona Brass Band, Holland’s Saskia Laroo and Circular Time from the United States.

Also on the agenda is an exhibition by Martinique photographer Philipe Bourgade at the Sorano theatre foyer 11-16 June, according to organizers.
