Detained Zimbabwe Opposition Official Wants to Attend Talks

July 9, 2008

The secretary general of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change, Tendai Biti, has applied to the Zimbabwe High Court for relaxation of bail conditions in his treason trial to allow him to attend inter-party talks to resolve the country’s political crisis, APA learned on Wednesday.

Biti, whose case was on Monday postponed to August 27, is seeking court permission to travel to South Africa after another court ordered him last month to surrender his passport as part of the conditions for his release on bail.

A lawyer, Biti is the chief negotiator for the opposition Movement for Democratic Change in the talks between MDC and the ruling ZANU PF party of President Robert Mugabe.

Talks between the two parties were expected to resume Wednesday in Pretoria, South Africa under the mediation of President Thabo Mbeki.
