125px-Flag_of_Samoa.svg5The visiting Australian Parliamentary Secretary for International Development Assistance, Bob McMullan says he did not expect the extent of the tsunami devastation to be this major.

Bob McMullan visited Lalomanu and Saleapaga, this morning and saw first hand the extent of the damage. He said he had seen the photos but the reality is nothing in comparison. He met and congratulated the emergency health workers and volunteers supporting the relief efforts.

McMullan was told by the health workers that what’s needed urgently is counseling for the affected residents who have to overcome their fear of the sea since the tsunami. A health worker told Talamua that the most affected people need to heal fast and one of the best ways to do this is to get physical and psychological help so they can move on quickly from what that reminds them of their destroyed past.

Some of the seriously affected families in Lalomanu, still have yet to get basic help such as makeshift shelters and tents and are still trying to rebuild from the rubble left by the tsunami.

Earlier this morning, Bob McMullan officially handed over Australia’s $5 million to help with the recovery and reconstruction work. He also met the Head of State, Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi and the Prime Minister. Australia has topped $7 million Australian dollars for emergency relief aid as well as financial help for recovery and reconstruction work at the affected areas.

McMullan also spoke at the opening of the new classroom and administration building at the Australia Pacific Technical College the National University Campus, this afternoon. The building is funded by Australia to the tune of $2.8 million tala.
