125px-Flag_of_Malawi.svg_Malawi President Bingu Wa Mutharika has declared Karonga, a district hit twice by earthquake, a disaster zone.

The declaration comes amid calls from the civil society urging the government and the stakeholders to quickly respond to the disaster.

Karonga district had been hit twice by the earthquakes which were measured at 5.2 and 6 respectively on the Richter Scale, killing almost four people, injuring and displacing several others.

In the statement, the president said Karonga was the only district in the country which had been so badly hit by the huge earthquake after decades.

However, the Commissioner for Disaster Preparedness Lilian Ngóma said the government was very much concerned about the situation in the district such that several appeals have been made for assistance and donations.

“We immediately need family tents, blankets, plastic sheets, maize flour and other items so that families are not separated,” she said.
