Doctors Without Borders Intervene in Uganda Cholera Epidemic
March 23, 2008
Doctors Without Borders, an international medical aid organization, has sent a team of doctors to Arua district, north west of the Ugandan capital, Kampala, to respond to an outbreak of cholera in the West Nile region.
Since the cholera epidemic broke out in Arua in January this year, 381 patients have been diagnosed and six have died.
At the peak of the outbreak, medical staff at the Oli cholera treatment center admitted up to 40 patients per day.
Anna Hess, a nurse with Doctors Without Borders, said Saturday that many of the patients are being treated with simple intravenous fluids.
Many of the patients being treated for cholera are children who arrive at the treatment center in critical condition.
Alfredo Gonzalez, the Doctors Without Borders field coordinator, said access to water has been limited, so people are going to find water where they can find it.
