The summit of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on the situation in Guinea has decided to impose an arms embargo against the junta in Guinea.
This decision was taken as the deadline set by the African Union to the junta led by Captain Moussa Dadis Camara expires Saturday at midnight. The AU had requested Captain Camara, who seized power in a coup in December 2008 not to stand for the presidential elections of January 2010.
“It is our duty to ask the military power in Guinea to formally commit to not to participate in the presidential election,” the Nigerian head of state Umaru Yar’Adua said in his speech opening the summit, adding that the sub-regional organization “could not remain indifferent to the situation in Guinea.
ECOWAS said that the arms embargo is explained by “atrocities and actions undertaken by the National Council for Democracy and Development (CNDD) to procure new weapons”, the final communique of the meeting in Abuja said.
