The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission said on Thursday in Abuja that it would work closely with Nigeria and other member states to realize a robust farming industry in West Africa to reduce hunger and poverty.
Jean Dieu Somda, the Vice President of the commission, said at end of the International Conference on Financing Agricultural Policy in West Africa that Nigeria had the capacity to feed the whole of the sub-region.
“Nigeria has the capacity to produce enough food for the entire West Africa, if its agricultural resources are properly harnessed,’’ he said, adding that the commission recently held a round-table meeting with Nigeria on plans to harness its agricultural potential.
He said the commission was committed to the implementation of the Regional Agricultural policy for West Africa (ECOWAP) by fast-tracking efforts to coordinate national policies of the member states.
Earlier, Sayyadi Abba Ruma, Nigerian Agriculture and Water Resources Minister, reiterated of his country’s commitment to developing the country through agriculture.
“Agriculture is the largest sector, providing employment and livelihood for over 70 per cent of the populace. As a government, we are interested in showcasing Nigeria’s agricultural potential,” he said.
