Egypt Slams Critics of Parliament’s Extension of Emergency Rule
May 31, 2008
The Egyptian Foreign minister, Ahmed Aboul Gheit on Saturday criticized comments made by some American and European official circles of a resolution passed by the Egyptian Shura (parliament) to extend emergency rule for two years.
Abul Gheit said in press statement issued Saturday, that “No outsider or foreign party has the right to comment on the work of the Egyptian parliament.” He pointed out that the Egyptian parliament is an elected body which reflects the views and interests of the people of Egypt.
Gheit explained that the extension of emergency rule does not freeze legislation being prepared to fight terrorism but that the issue needed more time so that it can meet the needs of the society in the fight against terrorism and at the same time safeguard the citizens’ rights and fundamental freedoms.
