Egyptian Billionaire Loses Appeal Over Request for British Monarch to Testify

March 19, 2008

The London-based Egyptian multi-billionaire Mohamed al Fayed, Tuesday lost his legal bid to force the Queen of England and her husband Prince Phillip (Duke of Edinburgh) to give evidence at the ongoing ‘inquest’ into the deaths of his son Dodi Fayed and his lover Princess Diana.

The plea entered by the boss of Harrods conglomerate was rejected by the High Court in London.

Mr. al Fayed, 76, has always accused the Royal family as being the architects of the August 31, 1997 deadly car crash in Paris, in which his son Dodi and Diana were killed.

Sir Igor Judge, president of the Queen’s Bench Division of the High Court, upheld last month’s ruling that the royal couple should not have to attend and requested al Fayed’s application to be refused.

But al Fayed and his team of lawyers led by Michael Beloff, wanted the Duke of Edinburgh to enter the witness-box and for the Queen to be asked a series of questions.

The coroner, Lord Justice Scott Baker, had earlier said that calling the Duke and asking the Queen questions would not assist the hearings.

Mr. al Fayed claimed that Princess Diana and his son Dodi were the victims of a conspiracy hatched by the Duke, using British, French and US secret agents.

The inquest continues.
