The Egyptian Foreign Ministry has categorically denied reports that Egypt will file suits against the Nile Basin countries.
Egypt’s deputy Foreign Minister for African affairs Mona Omar told reporters on Sunday that Egypt has “no reason to prosecute the Nile Basin countries.”
She said the Egyptian officials’ visits to Nile Basin countries will continue.
According to reports, Egypt has been allegedly “blocking” efforts to establish a permanent River-Basin Commission to implement development projects on the Nile.
The Nile Co-operative Framework Agreement seeks the establishment of a permanent Nile River Basin Commission through which member countries will act together to manage and develop the resources of the Nile.
The accord was supposed to be signed in September 2008 but was delayed because of lack of consensus on some articles in the agreement and signing was pushed to June this year, though there was no consensus.
The Nile Basin Initiative is a partnership among the Nile riparian states which are Burundi, DR Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.
Egypt and Sudan are the biggest beneficiaries of the water.
