Egyptian Leader to Visit Russia to Discuss Cooperation in Nuclear Energy

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is scheduled to visit Russia on Monday to hold talks with outgoing President Vladimir Putin and President-elect Dmitri Medvedev, who would assume office as President of Russia in May.

Presidents Mubarak and Putin will witness the signing of an agreement for cooperation between the two countries in the areas of peaceful uses of nuclear energy which will allow Egypt to benefit from the experience of the Russians in the field of peaceful nuclear technology, the Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheity said here Saturday.

Abul Gheit described Mubarak’s visit to Russia as a beginning of a new stage of bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

The talks between the Presidents Mubarak and Putin will deal with a number of issues, including the situation in Darfur, Palestinian, Iraq, Lebanon and Iran’s nuclear file, in addition to the situation in Kosovo, he added .

He explained that the rate of trade exchange between the two countries went up to 2.1 billion dollars in 2007 as the number of Russian tourists coming to Egypt jumped up to about 1.5 million visitors.
