GuineaThe Guinea Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is currently approaching the country’s Supreme Court to have the new date fixed for the presidential runoff.

In a telephone conversation with APA, the head of INEC operations, Dr Pathe Dieng said the electoral watchdog had not yet set a date for the runoff, contrary to reports in the Guinean capital saying the polls will be held on August 14th.

“No, the INEC has not set a date. We have not proposed the August 14th date. Presently, we are approaching the Supreme Court so that it derogates the constitutional date, in a bid to set a new law-abiding date.

“The runoff should be held 14 days after the final results of the first ballot are announced. So we cannot set a new date unless the Supreme Court resolves this issue,” he said.

One week after the final results of the June first presidential ballot were announced, Guinean voters are still looking forward to a new date for the runoff which will pit Cellou Dalein Diallo of the Guinea Union of Democratic Forces (UFDG) against Professor Alpha Conde of the Guinea People’s Rally (RPG).
