Ethiopian Airlines Inaugurates Next Generation Flight Simulator

February 6, 2008

Ethiopian Airlines on Tuesday inaugurated a $15 million Boeing-737 next generation flight simulator, making it the first airliner in sub-Saharan Africa to acquire the technology.

Transport and Communication Minister Juneydi Sadoo and EAL chief executive officer Girma Wake inaugurated the flight simulator.

He said the simulator would enhance the standards of training at the Ethiopian Airlines and enable it to train more pilots at home and avail training to regional airlines.

“The simulator would help Ethiopia to retrench $800,000 annually, while some $400,000 could be generated annually to train regional operators,” he said.

Trainee pilots from Madagascar, Cape Verde and Kenya have been trained in Ethiopian and requests are coming from Angola, Kenya and Nigeria for training on the newly installed B-737 flight simulator, he said.

The 61-year-old EAL serves 50 destinations around the globe of which 30 are in Africa.
