125px-Flag_of_Togo.svg_The first batch of European observers who will monitor the Togolese electoral process ahead of the 28 February presidential election is due in Lome in early January, a diplomatic source has told APA.

“The first observers are due in Togo in early January and they will monitor the key step of the electoral process,” Patrick Spirlet, the head of the EU delegation, told APA.

“Not only will they observe the elections but they will also stay to monitor the count of the votes as the electoral observation mission covers the three phases ; before, during and after the polls”, he added.

He further revealed that between 120 and 130 observers will be deployed in Togo during the electoral period.

According to him, the EU is much implicated in the electoral process in Togo by supporting the process in different ways.

“The EU has investment much in the framework of the presidential election”, the EU officer said, hinting at the Electoral Support Project (PAPE) which will back up the national independent electoral commission (CENI) and its institutions as well as the high audiovisual and communication authority (HAAC) and the electoral observation.

He also said the support project to securing the presidential election was due for launch.

The preparations for the 28 February polls have already started with the revision of the electoral rolls.
