Explosion Near US Embassy in Yemen Kills At Least One Local Guard
March 18, 2008
An attack near the U.S. Embassy in Yemen has killed at least one local security guard and wounded several other security personnel and some children.
Government officials and eyewitnesses say the blast at a girls’ school in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, happened early Tuesday.
Officials and eyewitnesses say unknown assailants hurled bombs at the school located next to the American Embassy. It is unclear whether the embassy or the school was the target of the attack.
Security officials have since secured the explosion site, sealing off roads to all traffic.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but officials say preliminary investigations suggest Islamic militants could be to blame.
Yemen, which joined the U.S.-led war against terrorism after the September 11, 2001 attacks, has witnessed a number of militant attacks targeting foreign tourists, oil installations, and U.S. and French ships.
