An explosion in a commercial mini bus killed three people while injuring seven others in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa on Tuesday evening, a police official told APA.
Commander Demsach Hailu said on the telephone that the explosion occurred while the mini bus was on its way from 4 Killo area to Meskel Square, which is near the Ethiopian ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“The explosion occurred while the minibus was around the Hilton Hotel and near the ministry of foreign affairs. So far, three people in the minibus have been confirmed dead, while another seven have been injured,” Demsach told APA. Two of the dead are women, he said.
He indicated that 13 people were on board the minibus when the explosion happened late in the evening.
As to whether any suspects have been arrested, Hailu said “We are undertaking some investigations, and so far no arrests have been made.” He also described the incident as a “terrorist attack.”
However, no one has as yet claimed responsibility for the explosion.
The explosion occurred while the Ethiopian Prime Minister was due to address parliament on Wednesday morning. It is however not yet clear if this incident would have any bearing on his scheduled address to the parliament.
Tuesday was a day in Addis Ababa when the ruling party elected a new mayor for the city after the party obtained a landslide victory in the recent local and bye elections held last weekend in the country.
