Nigeria’s affiliate of the US oil giant, ExxonMobil, on Saturday in Ibadan in south-western Nigeria, donated cervical cancer screening equipment worth N24 million (about US$206,000) to the Ibadan University College Hospital.
“Six teaching hospitals covering the six geopolitical regions in Nigeria have already benefited from the initial phase of this nationwide project during which equipment worth more than US$350,000 were distributed,’’ said Professor Isaac Adewole, Principal Investigator of cervical cancer in Nigeria.
He said that for now, Nigeria was the only country with the equipment in Africa, adding that the facility was available only in Canada and China.
Adewole, a former provost of the College of Medicine of the University of Ibadan, said that Cytosavant could be used to screen other forms of cancer.
According to him, cervical cancer is prominent among women, saying around the world a woman dies of the disease every two minutes.
Advising women on the need to visit the hospital for medical check-up every year, Adewole said that cancer could be diagnosed and prevented at the early stage.
In his speech, the chairman of the Ibadan University Teaching Hospital Medical Advisory Committee, Dr Adeniyi Adenipekun, said that the Cytosavant would go a long way in saving the lives of women.
Adenipekun, who was represented by his deputy, Dr Biola Okunlola, said that the device would boost the hospital’s tripartite functions of training, research and service.
“ExxonMobil corporate citizenship health initiative is supporting programs targeted to worldwide health issues because of the belief that good health is a springboard to opportunity, achievement, and development,’’ Adenipekun said.
ExxonMobil is the operator of a joint venture partnership between the company and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), with NNPC holding 60 percent and ExxonMobil 40 percent.
