Old Flag of MalawiThe family of the late President Bingu Wa Mutharika of Malawi on Tuesday obtained a court injunction restraining the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) from seizing the family’s properties which had a privilege of duty free into the country during Mutharika’s presidency.

MRA Commissioner General John Bizwick ordered the family to pay for all properties which had a privilege of duty free during the last 8 years including over 40 vehicles.

He said that no person other than the late President was entitled to the privilege and the family cannot therefore take or use the vehicles before duty is paid.

Through the Chagwamnjira and Company law firm, the late Mutharika’s brother Peter, daughter Tapiwa and the wife Callista, argued that they have the right to the properties.

"Our father as a president was entitled to importing limitless duty free vehicles under his benefits for the position he held," Tapiwa said.
