Fighting Resumes in Chad Between Rebels, Gov’t. Troops
April 2, 2008
Chadian loyalist forces and rebels were engaged in fierce fighting throughout Tuesday morning in the sub-prefecture of Addé, sources from the warring parties told APA.
The government said it flushed the rebels back and accused Sudan of ordering them to attack in violation of the accord signed last month in Dakar.
On their part, the rebels contended they occupied the city of Addé and routed the Abeché garrison (located at 150 km) that came to back up four loyalist regiments engaged in the fighting.
The Chadian army sent over a hundred truckloads of soldiers to the front on Tuesday, military sources told APA.
Corroborating sources said the army deployed soviet-made T55 and AML 90 tanks around the capital, N’djamena.
An immense landmine-laid three-meters deep and four-meters large pit was dug around N’djamena since the latest rebel attack was carried on 1-3 February.
The fighting comes two months after the rebels attempted to conquer the power through an early February attack on N’djamena.
