125px-Flag_of_Liberia.svg6The former leader of the disbanded rebel movement Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy (LURD), Sekou Damante Conneh, returned to Liberia Tuesday following a prolonged absence from the country.

Conneh reportedly arrived in Monrovia Tuesday afternoon from neighboring Sierra Leone, where he sought refuge after his release from detention in Guinea.

Conneh confirmed that he was detained by the military junta in the Guinean capital Conakry on allegation of raiding the home of his estranged wife, Aicha Conneh.

The former rebel leader’s spokesman, Jura Sand,o told APA Wednesday that the former rebel leader is in the country to contribute to the reconstruction process.

The LURD was active from 1999 to the signing of the peace agreements that ended the second civil war in 2003.

The power struggle between Conneh and his wife in January 2004 divided the group.

The United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) has completed the disarmament of 100,000 LURD troops.
