Four new banks; two Nigerian, a South African and a Gabonese, would soon open in the Cameroonian economic capital of Douala, sources close to the Central Africa Banking Commission (COBAC) have revealed.
There is also the Franco-Gabonese International Bank (BGFI BANK) whose approval to open a branch in Douala has already been concluded. COBAC sources report that the bank has shareholders such as Pascaline Bongo, the daughter of President Omar Bongo Ondimba of Gabon who died on 8 June.
After the coming of the Nigerian Union Bank of Africa (UBA) in Cameroon two years ago, two other Nigerian banks are expected in the next few months.
They include the Intercontinental Bank of Nigeria which is among the top five banks in Nigeria, and whose CEO Chris Alabi has just ended a visit to Cameroon during which he met the authorities and the business community.
There is also the Oceanic Bank that may soon start operating in Cameroon. According to reliable information, it would be interested in taking over a bank in Cameroon i.e. the First Trust Savings and Loans.
A South African bank SKYE is also expected in Cameroon. Its approval file could be completed in July.
The new banks will add up to Ecobank, UBA, Atlantic Bank and Attijariwafa bank, which are already present in Douala.
