Nigerian Ambassador to Malaysia, Peter Anegbeh, said in Abuja on Tuesday that Nigerians have exported kidnapping to foreign countries as they reign supreme in Malaysia but the country’s government has responded positively by arresting four of them for allegedly kidnapping six people.
Ambassador Peter Anegbeh said that the suspects allegedly snatched four Nigerians, one Malaysian and an Indonesian in June.
Anegbeh, presently on holiday, remarked that kidnapping involving “supposedly Nigerian students” had become common in recent times in Malaysia.
“The unfortunate trend is portraying Nigeria in bad light in spite of government’s efforts to project the country’s good image through its “Good People, Great Nation’’ slogan,” he said.
“The fake students demand as much as $10,000 and also engage in other vices, such as cultism, drug trafficking and robbery, he added.
In the meantime, over 500 suspected kidnappers have been apprehended across Nigeria with the majority of them from the south-east.
A few traditional rulers in the South East that may have conspired with kidnappers have also been dethroned and are awaiting trial.
