The 14th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) will be held from 25 January to 2 February 2010 in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) at its headquarters on the theme ’’New Information and Communication Technologies in Africa : Challenges and Opportunities for Development,” a source close to the continental organization told APA on Thursday.
The African Union Commissioner in charge of human resources, science and technology introduced the theme.
According to a release from the AU, the secretary general of the International Telecommunication Union Dr. Hamadoun Toure and the World Bank president Robert Zoellick are expected to attend the event.
Apart from political issues related mostly to the resolution of conflicts in Africa, the heads of state and government will discuss the theme of the summit before considering adopting various reports, including the report of the Peace and Security Council on its activities and the peace and security situation in Africa.
The summit will also discuss the report of the Commission on unconstitutional changes of governments and that of the chairman of the committee of heads of state and government on the implementation of NEPAD.
The summit will also discuss the report of the ministerial meeting on the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the interim report of the Commission on the implementation of the decision of on the Hissene Habre case, adopted by the thirteenth session of the Conference held in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) in February 2009.
The summit will be preceded on 25 to 26 January by the 19th Ordinary Session of the Permanent Representatives Committee, comprising the ambassadors accredited to the AU, and the 16th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council, comprising ministers of foreign affairs (28–29 January).
Two African scientists, winners of continental science prizes, will receive their awards at the summit.
