senegal2France is scheduled to close its military bases in Senegal keeping just a sub-regional cooperation center, President Abdoulaye Wade’s spokesperson Bamba Ndiaye has said.

Ndiaye said the French Defense Minister, Hervé Morin, discussed the issue on Friday with the Senegalese head of state.

“The French military bases will be closed under an agreement to be signed by both parties by April 4, 2010,” Bamba Ndiaye said.

However, the withdrawal of the 1,200 French troops from Senegal will be gradual, he said.

Mr. Morin said, “we are moving towards the establishment of regional military cooperation centers because the concept of military bases is now over”.

The French soldiers are present in Senegal under a defense agreement signed in 1974 between Paris and Dakar.

Seven other African countries are signatories to the same defense agreements with France, it is recalled.
