The French government has trained 143 Liberian National Police officers who will be integrated into the Police Support Unit (PSU).
According to media reports Thursday, the three-week training was conducted by three French Gendarmerie officers (para-military police).
It comprised basic techniques in combating and controlling riots, as well as mob and electoral violence, among others.
Speaking at the closing ceremony on Wednesday, the Charge d’Affaires at the French embassy in Monrovia, Dominique martial said the training was in fulfillment of a pledge his government made to Liberia when President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf visited that country in January 2009.
He put the cost of the training at $100,000.
In her remarks, Liberia’s Justice Minister, Christiana Tah praised France for the training, and expressed the hope that more Liberian security officers would benefit from such training opportunities.
